Marks on Paper My interest in photography was born of my Grandfather’s passion for making photographs. Some of my earliest memories are of slide shows he gave, looking through the photographer’s books in his collection, and sitting for hours watching the magical ‘marks’ appear on photographic paper in his tiny dark room. My first camera, an Agfa Isolette given to me by my mother, helped me develop my own passion for making pictures. While I now shoot with a range of cameras - digital SLR, pinhole, box, holga, medium and large format, I really make no distinction in the method. The essential desire is, and has always been, to make ‘marks on paper’. Recent Work My recent direction finds me making portraits of men; more specifically, men with hairy faces. My goal isn't so much to catalogue facial hair, but instead it is to uncover some of what it is to be male, where the beard or moustache is used as a neutral labeling device for identifying and connecting the male of the species. Using the studio during Rayko's three month Artist-in-Residence program has allowed me to continue and progress my visual thinking on this subject, pursuing two very different ideas. In both series I sought to make portraits that eschew sociotypical projections of 'masculinity' such as 'courage', 'bravery', and 'assertiveness', and instead reflect sensitivity, tenderness, and vulnerability. |
